Description
17 Market Place, formerly known as the Black Swan Inn, is a shop building dating from the mid to late 18th century, with earlier origins and later alterations from the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted arches of gauged brick on a rendered plinth, with painted stone quoins and a timber eaves cornice. The building has coped gables, shaped kneelers, and brick end stacks, one of which has been rebuilt, all topped by a pantile roof.
The structure is three storeys high with an attic and has a four-window front. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front with a central doorway framed by windows, each containing three round-arched lights. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with the two on the right paired together and set beneath keyed flat arches. The second-floor windows are 4-pane sashes beneath flat arches without keyblocks, and all windows feature painted stone sills. A prominent moulded and dentilled eaves cornice adds to the building's character. The attic includes two inserted gabled dormers, each with 2x6-light sliding sashes.
