Description
This is a two-storey shop located within a terrace on the north side of Church Street in Warrenpoint. Construction likely occurred between 1820 and 1839. The building has been extensively altered and has lost its original shopfront, windows, and interior, retaining no features of architectural or historical importance.
The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with a rendered chimney at the right end and tiled skews. A raised eaves course supports metal rainwater goods. The front elevation is two windows wide, with rendered and painted walls and stepped V-channelled stucco quoins to the first floor. A modern four-panelled door sits to the right, above a modern shop front, which includes broad, modern timber pilasters with original stucco curvilinear consoles to either end of the elevation, and between the door and the shop front. These consoles support a moulded stucco cornice, which also serves as the first-floor cill course. The modern shop front is constructed of stained timber, featuring a flush fascia, a wide recessed doorway, and large modern windows to the left and right. There are two first-floor windows with modern stained timber frames, side-hung casements, and moulded stucco architraves. The gables are abutted by adjoining buildings. The rear elevation was not inspected.
The building appears on the 1834 Valuation town plan and was described as measuring 25 feet 6 inches by 30 feet by 19 feet 6 inches in the 1835 Valuation. Similar dimensions are recorded in the 1863 Valuation book, suggesting the same building. Valuation records indicate the building was "improved" in 1873. A 1969 Historic Buildings and Monuments Board for Northern Ireland (HMBB) survey card describes the building as c.1864, with a two-storey structure shopped on the ground floor, rendered above with raised quoins, and three-light windows with top openers enclosed in square moulded architraves. Panelled pilasters rose to architrave blocks, supporting a cornice with channelled consoles. The HMBB survey slide shows the original shop front with a moulded basecourse, panelled stucco pilasters on moulded bases, and two additional central pilasters framing its doors. The shop windows were single panes in painted timber frames, with the shop painted yellow and details in light blue, partially obscured by an awning.
