Description
This is a three-storey shop located on Church Street in Warrenpoint, facing onto the town’s square. The building is dated to between 1840 and 1859. It retains no features of architectural or historic interest.
The pitched roof is covered in natural slate, with tall rendered chimneys on each gable. A concrete skew is positioned to the right and a leaded one to the left. The eaves are marked by a modern plastic rainwater goods system. The front elevation is cement-rendered and painted, and is two windows wide on the upper floors. The ground floor is occupied by a recent shop front with a large boxed fascia. Each upper floor has two wide uPVC casement windows with thin concrete cills, the second-floor windows being lower in height. The right gable abuts a lower building (HB16/11/007), and the exposed section is rendered and has “CHEMISTS” painted vertically on the wall. The left gable also abuts a lower building; the exposed section is rendered and blank. The rear elevation was not inspected.
A building is shown on the 1834 Valuation town plan and was recorded in the First Valuation book (1834) as measuring 26ft x 24ft x 19ft 6in and operating as a shop. The Second Valuation (1863) describes it as a house with different dimensions, suggesting a significant refurbishment or complete rebuild. A rear return was added in 1875, and the building’s use changed to a shop in 1907. A historical survey card dating from 1969 described the building as having rendered walls, raised quoins on the first and second floors, a slated roof with a square eaves cornice, double-hung windows, and panelled pilasters rising to architrave blocks supporting gablets flanking a cornice over the fascia. A survey slide of the adjacent building (HB16/11/007) shows the right half of this building, with a recessed central doorway, a panelled stucco stallriser and cill, and large fixed shop windows flanking the entrance. The shop front features a panelled stucco pilaster with a chamfered base and consoles supporting a gabled coping, and a moulded fascia with an awning box obscuring the first-floor cill level.
