Description
One of eight identical houses forming a terrace on the north side of Church Street in Warrenpoint, this building dates from between 1860 and 1879. It is a late 19th-century structure, now subdivided into three flats, and remains a significant element within the townscape despite some alterations.
The house is constructed with rendered walls, stepped stucco quoins to the left corner, and a pitched natural slate roof with a tiled verge on the left. A moulded render eaves course incorporates ogee gutters, and a large rendered chimney is positioned at the right end. A continuous cill course runs along the first-floor level. The left bay is narrower and contains the main entrance, framed by a semicircular-headed opening with a moulded render architrave incorporating a decorative key block. The entrance door is four-panelled, with beaded muntins, raised fielded panels, and a bolection moulded design. A plainly glazed radial fanlight sits above the door, and a modern top-hung casement window occupies the space directly above. The right bay features a full-height canted bay window with a matching roofline and shared eaves. Each face of the bay window has a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, slightly reduced in height on the second floor. The facade retains much of its original fabric, although two front windows have been altered. A small front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall with modern wrought metal railings. A 1/1 sash window is located between the ground and first floors on the left gable, with a similar window at first floor right. Two smaller, modern top-hung casements are on the second floor right, while a semicircular-headed 1/1 sliding sash window is set in the apex. The rear elevation was not accessed for inspection, and the right gable shares a party wall with the adjacent property.
The building first appears in the Valuation Book of 1879. It has local historical interest and displays a pleasing architectural style and proportion. While alterations detract somewhat from the original design, it contributes significantly to group value within the terrace.
