Description
3 Cloughmore Terrace is one of eight houses forming a terrace on Church Street in Warrenpoint, County Down. Built between 1860 and 1879, the terrace remains a notable feature of the townscape, despite subsequent alterations. This is the third house from the left in the row, and has been subdivided into three flats.
The building is a late 19th-century, three-storey, two-bay house. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a large rendered chimney positioned at the left end of the ridge, shared with the adjacent house. A moulded rendered eaves course incorporates ogee rainwater goods. The walls are rendered and painted, with a continuous cill course at first floor level. The left bay is narrower than the right, and contains the main entrance, set within a semicircular-headed opening framed by a moulded stucco architrave and a decorative key block. The entrance door is four-panelled, with beaded muntins and raised, fielded, and bolection moulded panels, and is topped by a plainly glazed radial fanlight. Above the door is a modern, top-hung casement window, mirroring the style of the door surround. A 1/1 sliding sash window occupies the second floor, slightly reduced in height. The right bay features a full-height canted bay window, with a roof tied into the main roof and sharing a common eaves line. Each face of the bay window contains a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, the second-floor windows being slightly reduced in height. A small front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall topped with modern wrought metal railings. The left gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent house (listed separately). The right gable is also a party wall, shared with another adjacent house. Rear and side elevations were not accessible for inspection.
The house first appears in the Valuation Book of 1879. Its architectural style is characterised by restrained elegance and proportion. While alterations, particularly to the rear, detract from the original design, the building retains considerable group value within the terrace and contributes to the local historical interest of the area. Planning applications for conversions to flats were previously rejected due to inappropriate alterations to windows and other details, and recommendations were made for rectifying unauthorized changes.
