Description

One of eight houses forming a terrace on Church Street in Warrenpoint, this house dates from around 1870 to 1879. Despite alterations, the terrace remains a prominent feature of the town, contributing to its group value.

The house is the third from the right in a row of identical, three-storey, two-bay late 19th-century houses on the north side of Church Street. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a large rendered chimney positioned at the left end of the ridge, shared with the adjacent house. The eaves are detailed with moulded render and ogee rainwater pipes. The external walls are lined, rendered, and painted, featuring a continuous cill course at first-floor level.

The left bay is narrower and contains the main entrance, set within a semicircular opening framed by a moulded stucco architrave and decorative key block. The entrance door is four-panelled, with beaded muntins and raised, fielded, and bolection-moulded panels, topped by a plainly glazed radial fanlight. Above the door is a single 1/1 sliding sash window on each upper floor. The first-floor window has an architrave matching the doorcase, while the second-floor window is slightly reduced in height. The right bay has a full-height canted bay window with a roof that ties into the main roof and shares a common eaves line. Each face of the bay window contains a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, the second-floor windows being slightly diminished in height. A small, front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall with modern wrought metal railings. The left gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent house.

The rear elevation has a two-storey return to the right and is otherwise rendered and painted, with a 1/1 uPVC window. A similar window is on the first floor, and a 2/2 vertically divided sliding sash window is located on the second floor. The rear return has a pitched natural slate roof and rendered, painted walls with 1/1 uPVC windows on each floor, three to each. A modern door is located on the ground floor to the left. The end gable and right cheek are blank. A small, single-storey outbuilding with a lean-to natural slate roof and rendered walls stands in the rear yard. The right gable is a party wall shared with an adjacent house.

The house first appears in the Valuation Book in 1879.
