Description
5 Cloughmore Terrace is a three-storey, two-bay terraced house forming part of a significant set of eight identical houses on the north side of Church Street in Warrenpoint. Dating from between 1860 and 1879, it is listed as Grade B2 for its architectural and historical interest.
The house is constructed with rendered and painted walls beneath a pitched natural slate roof. A large rendered chimney rises at the left end of the ridge, shared with the adjoining house. Moulded render eaves carry ogee gutters. All front windows have been replaced with uPVC top-hung casements, though the building retains most of its original fabric otherwise.
The front elevation is divided into two unequal bays. The left bay is narrower and contains the principal entrance set within a semicircular-headed opening with moulded render architrave and decorative keyblock. The door itself is four-panelled with beaded muntin and raised, fielded and bolection-moulded panels, crowned by a plainly glazed radial fanlight. Above the door on each upper floor sits a single 1/1 window. The first-floor window retains an architrave matching the doorcase, while the second-floor window is plain and slightly diminished in height. The right bay features a canted bay window rising through all three storeys, with its own pitched roof tied into the main roof structure and sharing a common eaves course. Each face of the bay contains 1/1 windows, with those to the second floor slightly diminished. A continuous cill course runs at first-floor level across the front.
A small front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall carrying modern wrought metal railings. The left gable forms a party wall with the adjacent house to the left, and the right gable similarly abuts the adjoining house to the right.
The rear (north-east) elevation is abutted on the right by a two-storey return. The exposed rear walls are rendered and painted to ground-floor level only. On the left, each floor has a 1/1 modern uPVC window with painted cill, with the second-floor window diminished in height. Between the first and second floors, over the return roof, sits a half-landing window of similar design. The two-storey return has its own pitched natural slate roof with a centre-ridge cement-rendered chimney and plastic rainwater goods. Its ground floor is rendered and painted, with its left cheek featuring multiple uPVC casement windows comprising a timber door, a wide central window, and a second window. The first floor of the return has three uPVC windows. The return's end gable is blank and is abutted by a single-storey lean-to outbuilding. Enclosing the rear of the small domestic yard is a single-storey outbuilding with mono-pitched natural slate roof, rendered and painted walls, and a single window and door on its yard-facing wall.
The house first appears in the Valuation Book in 1879. Although the terrace as a whole has been affected by various alterations, it remains a significant architectural set piece in the town. This particular house is relatively little altered beyond the replacement of its front windows.
