Description

This is one of eight houses forming a terrace on Church Street in Warrenpoint, Newry, and is a significant feature of the townscape. Although the terrace has undergone alterations, number 2 Cloughmore Terrace retains a largely original façade. The house has been subdivided into three flats.

The house, dating to the late 19th century (between 1860 and 1879), is the second from the left in a row of identical three-storey, two-bay buildings on the north side of Church Street. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a large rendered chimney at the left end and shared with the adjoining property. The eaves are finished with moulded render and feature ogee rainwater goods. The walls are lined, rendered, and painted, with a continuous cill course at the first floor level.

The left bay is narrower than the right. The main entrance is set within a semicircular-headed opening, framed by a moulded stucco architrave and a decorative key block. The entrance has a modern four-panelled door with raised and fielded panels, topped by a radially glazed fanlight. There is a single 1/1 sliding sash window to each upper floor. The first-floor window has an architrave matching the doorcase, while the second-floor window is plainer and slightly reduced in height. The right bay features a full-height canted bay window, incorporating a canted roof that ties into the main roof and shares a common eaves line. Each face of the bay window has a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, with the second-floor windows slightly reduced in height. A small front garden is enclosed by a finely dressed granite dwarf wall with modern wrought metal railings.

The left gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent house (listed separately as HB16/11/033A). The right gable is also a party wall, shared with the property to the right (HB16/11/033C). The house appears in the Valuation Book of 1879.

The architectural interest stems from its style, proportions, ornamentation, setting, and group value. It also holds local historical significance.
