Description
This is a pair of small, two-storey, two-bay houses forming part of a longer terrace in Havelock Place, Warrenpoint, County Down. Dating from 1840 to 1859, the buildings, specifically number 6, are notable for their unusual design, particularly in conjunction with number 12 and the larger house at number 9. Number 9 was formerly the Royal Hotel, which may explain the presence of regal lions on the gables.
The houses have pitched natural slate roofs with a shared chimney on the left side. Modern rainwater goods and a common downpipe are present. The walls are pebbledashed with a thin cement render to the right corner. The front door, a modern glazed door at ground floor right, has a plain transom. There are three windows – one at ground floor left and two smaller ones to the first floor, all of which are enlarged original openings. These modern windows are side-hung casements with top-hung transoms and thin concrete sills. A small front area is enclosed by modern wrought iron railings on a dwarf wall.
The right gable, which functions as the front elevation, features stepped crenellations rising to a broad plinth supporting a reclining lion facing its counterpart on the gable of number 12. This gable also has two windows, one to each floor, matching the detailing of the others. The rendered dwarf wall to the front area is topped with plain spiked railings and gates. The left gable forms a party wall with the adjacent property. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
Although buildings are shown on the 1834 Valuation town map, the current house is not depicted until the 1861 map. The Second Valuation book of 1863 describes the house as measuring 7 yards by 5.5 yards with two storeys and a one-storey return.
