Description

This is a two-and-a-half-story, two-bay house built between 1840 and 1859, located in a terrace of four houses at the western end of Havelock Place in Warrenpoint, County Down. The building has been significantly altered and now retains no features of architectural or historical interest.

The house is the second from the right in the terrace. It has a pitched natural slate roof and a cement-rendered chimney at the left end. The front elevation features two canted wallhead dormers with canted roofs and modern windows. The front walls are modern cement rendering with stepped quoins at either end. The modern front door, located on the ground floor to the right, includes a semicircular fanlight with a raised stucco keystone; the fanlight retains its original radial spider's web leaded glazing bars. There is one window to the left of the door and two windows on the first floor. All windows are 1/1 sliding sashes with modern rendered architraves. A modern rendered dwarf wall with a balustrade encloses the small front area. The left gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent house, and the right gable is also a party wall. The rear elevation was not inspected.

An 1834 Valuation town map shows a block of five houses; however, the 1861 map indicates only four houses at that location, suggesting a complete rebuild occurred between those dates. The 1863 Valuation book describes the house as measuring 7.25 yards by 9 yards, with 2.5 storeys and a 1.75-storey return. A later 19th-century photograph by Lawrence depicts a cast iron skylight on the front roof pitch and shows that the walls appeared harled. The windows in the photograph were originally 8/8 sliding sashes, unlike the modern replacements seen today. The front dwarf wall originally had railings.
