Description

This is a significantly altered, two-and-a-half-story, two-bay house located at the right-hand end of a terrace of four houses that were originally identical, dating to the mid-19th century. The terrace is situated at the western end of Havelock Place in Warrenpoint. The roof is pitched and covered with artificial slate, with a cement skew to the right end. Cement-rendered chimneys are present at each end. The front pitch features two gabled wallhead dormers with fretted bargeboards. The front facade has modern cement rendering and lacks the stepped quoins seen on the other three houses in the terrace. A modern door with a semicircular fanlight is set into the ground floor on the right-hand side; the fanlight retains its original radial spider’s web leaded glazing bars. Window styles are also varied; a ground floor window on the left is a horizontally divided 2/2 sliding sash, while the two first-floor windows comprise a top-hung casement and a sliding sash respectively. All windows have modern rendered architraves, and the dormer windows are modern. A modern raised and rendered dwarf wall encloses the small front area. The left gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent house, and the right gable is a party wall shared with a slightly lower adjacent house (HB16/11/013E); the exposed section of this gable is blank. The rear elevation was not inspected.

An 1834 Valuation town map depicts a block of five houses, although their dimensions could not be determined from the Valuation book. The fact that the 1861 map shows only four houses suggests a complete rebuilding occurred between these dates. The 1863 Valuation book describes the house as measuring 7.25 yards by 9 yards, with 2.5 storeys and a 1.5-story return. A late 19th-century Lawrence photograph shows a cast iron skylight on the front pitch and illustrates houses with 8/8 sliding sash windows and harled walls, with railings on the front dwarf wall. The building has been altered and retains no features of architectural or historical interest.
