Former lime kiln, To NE of Lower Knockbarragh Rd, Mayobridge, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2SF

This is a former lime kiln located to the northeast of Lower Knockbarragh Road, near Mayobridge, Newry, County Down. While relatively well-preserved, it is not considered sufficiently significant to be listed. The kiln is situated behind a ruined farmstead, north of Lower Knockbarragh Road, in the townland of Ballyvally.

The kiln is square in plan and stands 2.6 metres high at the front (northeast side) and 0.8 metres high at the rear. There is no evidence of a loading platform. It is constructed of quarried, random Silurian rubble. A circular, tapering pot, lined with rounded field stones and measuring 2.5 metres in diameter at the top, is now partially infilled. The entrance to the drawhole is defined by a granite lintel, with an opening measuring 1.3 metres wide by 1.6 metres high. The side walls taper inwards and step back and down toward the drawhole at the rear of the passage. The drawhole itself is now buried, though a small ventilation hole remains visible above it. A section of the frontage to the right of the drawhole has collapsed.

The kiln first appears on the 1901-02 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, suggesting a late 19th century date of erection between 1860 and 1879. It is currently derelict and possesses industrial archaeological interest.
