Description
The house faces east on rising ground on the west side of the road from Hilltown to Rostrevor about two miles from the former town. The backdrop is formed by the hill of Grugganskeagh and the outlook includes Rocky Mountain and the Mournes. A large agricultural shed is under construction in the field immediately behind.. It detracts from the setting. A single storey, three-bay, direct entry house with remains of thatch under corrugated iron that terminates in raised parapets at the gables. A stub of a chimneystack remains over the position of the kitchen hearth. The external finish is of lined render at the front and at the right hand (north) side. Alternating quoins dress the resulting corner. The rear and the left hand (south) side are of exposed stone. The rear has been whitened. Entry to the building is by means of a timber sheeted half door set in a projecting gabled porch finished with a decorative bargeboard. The entrance is flanked on either side by a pair of vertically sliding windows with sashes divided into two vertical panes. The frames are exposed and the sashes are provided with stops. The sills are of traditional depths at the leading faces and each opening is surmounted by a decorative keystone embellished with a circular motif. The wall surface at the rear is unbroken apart from a small plain-glazed window that provides light to the rear of the kitchen.
