Description
This is a single-storey, three-bay direct entry house likely built between 1820 and 1839. It stands on rising ground facing east on Rostrevor Road, approximately two miles from the former town of Hilltown, with views of Grugganskeagh Hill, Rocky Mountain, and the Mourne Mountains. A large agricultural shed currently under construction in the adjacent field detracts from the setting.
The house's design retains its original layout, and the roof construction is of significant interest. Originally thatched, the roof is now covered with corrugated iron that terminates in raised parapets at the gables; remnants of thatch remain. A stub of a chimneystack marks the former location of the kitchen hearth. The front and right (north) sides are finished with lined render, while the rear and left (south) side walls are of exposed stone, the rear of which has been whitened. Quoins alternate along the corners.
The main entrance is through a timber half-door set within a projecting gabled porch, detailed with decorative bargeboards. It is flanked by a pair of vertically sliding windows with sashes divided into two vertical panes; the frames are exposed and the sashes are fitted with stops. Decorative keystones, each embellished with a circular motif, are set above the sills on the leading faces of each opening. A small, plain-glazed window provides light to the rear of the kitchen.
The house appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859, accompanied by a small section of an outbuilding set at an angle on the south side. A floor-level hearth, revealed by the removal of a stove, and the central position of the bedroom doorway are noteworthy features.
