Description

This is a relatively unaltered house dating from the early 19th century, located off Lower Knockbarragh Road, Mayobridge, Newry, County Down. It is of interest due to the use of clay mortar in its construction, although it lacks other outstanding features.

The house is a derelict, one-and-a-half-storey, two-bay vernacular dwelling accessed via a hollow way leading up from a stream to the west. It has a pitched roof covered with graduated natural slate tiles. A rendered chimney is positioned centrally along the ridge, and a low brick chimney is located on the east gable. There are no rainwater goods. The walls are constructed of random Silurian rubble, unpainted and unrendered. Clay mortar was extensively used on the inner skin of the walls, while lime mortar was used on the exterior. The south-facing principal elevation has a windbreak entrance porch with a catslide natural slate roof on the left side of the right bay; the door is now missing. Window openings are present to the right of the door and centrally within the left bay, although their frames have been removed. The remaining walls are blank, except for a small, infilled window opening on the rear elevation.

The house's footprint is visible on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, and it was not valued, indicating a valuation of under £5. Valuation records show no change in value from 10 shillings between approximately 1862 and 1930, suggesting the existing building dates to the early 19th century. The property is situated within the townland of Cleomack and is in private ownership.
