Description
This is a single-span bridge carrying a one-and-a-half lane road over a stream. Constructed between 1880 and 1899, it features a troughed deck construction of riveted metal sections supported by wrought iron beams on either side. The bridge rests on large, irregularly shaped sandstone blocks laid in courses. It has parapet railings consisting of angle-iron uprights, a top rail, and three lower rails, terminating in piers built from squared rubble sandstone. The bridge first appears on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1857 and is confirmed on the 1907 edition, indicating its late 19th century construction. As an example of industrial archaeology, the bridge is of particular interest.
