Description

This vernacular house, likely constructed between 1860 and 1879 and occupying a secluded, elevated site overlooking the road, retains significant original character due to limited alterations. The house is aligned southwest-northeast on a lane north of the Dernawilt Road and features a symmetrical two-story, three-bay design. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with a polychrome brick chimney dividing each bay. A slightly advanced eaves course supports cast-iron rainwater goods. The walls are harled. All windows are exposed box sliding sash windows with horns and stone sills, with the principal elevation facing southeast. The central doorway is timber-sheeted, flanked by four-paned sidelights and a three-part transom above, with decorative timber console brackets on either side. The flanking bays contain 2/2 windows (horizontally divided) on the ground floor, and above them are three 6/3 windows, which are slightly reduced in height. A 6/6 window is located on the centre of the first floor of the left gable. The rear elevation features 2/2 windows in the left and right bays on the ground floor. The central bay includes a t+g-sheeted door to the left and windows on both floors to the right, with a 6/6 window on the ground floor and a 1/1 window above. A datestone reading “H.B. 1870” (referring to Henry Blakely, a relative of the current owner) is situated above the door. The right gable is abutted on the left by a single-story outbuilding with a monopitched corrugated metal roof; the exposed section is blank, while the northeast face and left cheek have a timber top-hung casement window at centre, and the right cheek incorporates a t+g-sheeted door. The site is elevated, maturely planted, and accessible via a long lane from the road. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 onwards, indicate a building was present on the site. Early valuation books suggest an original one-story structure, with the present house likely erected or enlarged in 1870. The rateable value increased in 1882. The listing acknowledges architectural interest in the building's style, proportions, plan form, quality and survival of interior details, and setting, as well as its local historical significance.
