House, Tonity Bog, Rosslea, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 7LZ

This is a single-storey, two-bay hearth-lobby vernacular dwelling located in the Tonity Bog townland, near Rosslea, County Fermanagh. It sits to the east of McMahon’s Spadeworks (HB12/01/086). The house was built as accommodation for workers at the nearby spade mill and is the sole surviving example of three such dwellings.

The building is aligned northwest-southeast, with a pitched corrugated metal roof and a brick chimney at the centre. There are no rainwater goods. The principal elevation faces southwest and is constructed from lime-rendered random rubble stone. The right bay features a tongue-and-groove sheeted door to the left, alongside a two-over-two sliding sash window. The left bay mirrors this arrangement with a similar window. The left and right gables are blank. The rear elevation has a single window in the left bay.

Although buildings are depicted on the 1835 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, the brickwork around the window openings suggests a mid-19th century date, likely coinciding with the establishment of the spade mill. A 1989 survey card describes a former terrace of three houses, with the central one having been demolished. The original terrace had natural slate roofs, corbelled red brick chimneys, rainwater goods made of plastic, metal or cast iron, wet-dashed walls with a smooth painted basecourse, and two-paned sliding sash windows. Entrance doors were originally flush ply with a single pane of glass. Later alterations include the replacement of the natural slate roof with corrugated metal and changes to the window and door detailing.
