Description
This is a small-scale bridge located in the Ballagh/Keeran Beg townland, near Rosslea, County Fermanagh. Likely constructed between 1840 and 1859, it first appears on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1858. The bridge consists of a single segmental skew span which carries a one-and-a-half lane road over a stream. It is built entirely of sandstone. The finely dressed voussoirs, which form the arch, spring directly from the bed of the stream, and feature a rusticated keystone. The remainder of the bridge is constructed from random sandstone blocks. The soffit stones are laid orthogonally. The parapets are coped with larger blocks, with the central and end blocks being raised and rusticated. The downstream (south) spandrel and parapet appear to have been rebuilt at some point, as they are regularly coursed and use heavy cement mortar. Although of no special architectural merit, the bridge is noted for its industrial archaeological interest.
