Description

This is a disused lime kiln located on the north side of a minor road, behind a modernized farmhouse, in the townland of Ballagh, Co Fermanagh. The kiln is aligned north-south and built into the quarry face, with the ground behind serving as a loading ramp for the kiln pot. Constructed of random rubble with dressed stepped quoins, the kiln features a single cylindrical, brick-lined pot, originally 1.5 meters in diameter, which is now partially filled with rubbish. The visible face of the kiln measures 5.0 meters wide and stands 5.7 meters high. A draw hole is accessed through a semicircular-headed opening; the jambs of which are cement rendered. This opening is 2.5 meters wide and rises 2.8 meters to the crown. Its brick soffit slopes down to the draw hole, which is set within a small random rubble wall and trimmed with brick. A structure is depicted at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, although initially unlabelled. It was definitively identified as a lime kiln on the 1907 Ordnance Survey twenty-five-inch map, annotated as 'L.K.'. The kiln likely dates from the mid-19th century, between 1840 and 1859. The kiln is noted as derelict and of industrial archaeological interest.
