Description
The war memorial stands at the junction of Harbour Road, Main Street, and Springvale Road, in Ballywalter, County Down. Constructed around 1925, it commemorates those who died in the Great War and subsequent conflicts. The memorial features a life-size bronze statue of a soldier, holding a rifle, set upon a roughly 2.5-metre-high pedestal of rough, battered granite, which is set on a concrete base. The front (south-west) face of the pedestal displays a slate panel listing the names of those who fell in the Great War (1914-1918). A smaller slate panel on the north-west face bears the names of those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945). The sculptor’s name, "P.C. Bertram," is inscribed at the base of the statue. The memorial was likely erected between 1920 and 1930 and originally stood approximately 23 metres east of its current location.
