2 Springvale Road, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PE

Two storey gabled house with half-dormers and decorative window and door surrounds, built between 1860 and 1879 to serve as the master's residence for the nearby school. The building stands at the north-east end of Springvale Road on the south side of Ballywalter village.

The facade is finished in lined render with quoins and a chamfered plinth. The gabled roof is covered in Bangor blue slates. The chimney stacks are rendered with cornices on brackets, particularly to the north stack. There is a slight overhang to the eaves and cast iron rainwater goods.

The front (west) elevation is symmetrical. At its centre is a panelled timber door with a semicircular fanlight featuring margin tracery. The door and fanlight are surrounded by simple pilasters with an archivolt and keystone. This surround is further encased with outer pilasters with carved brackets supporting a cornice and blocking course. On either side of the doorway are paired sash windows with margins to the upper sash. The windows have pilasters on both sides and to the centre mullion (similar to the outer pilasters on the doorway), which support a cornice and blocking course. Below the window cills are three brackets.

The first floor features three evenly spaced gabled half-dormers, each with a semicircular headed window opening with surrounds matching those of the doorway and fitted with sash frames with margins. Each has two brackets to the cill. There is a large overhang to the eaves. At the first floor centre of each gable are paired semicircular headed window openings with simple surrounds and sash frames with a single vertical astragal to each sash.

The rear elevation (access was limited) contains a full-height lean-to extension with a mixture of sash and modern windows. Modern windows are also present to the rear of the main house. The rear is enclosed by a high rendered wall with a modern garage at the back of the yard.

Known locally as the Headmaster's House, this building was constructed as the residence for the master of Ballywalter Park School, the much-altered neighbouring building to the south (now the parochial hall). The school itself appears to have been built in the 1850s, though this house is post-1860, possibly around 1875 to 1880. The Italianate detailing closely resembles the original style of the school house, which itself appears to have echoed the nearby Lanyon gate lodge at Ballywalter Park. The school closed in 1932.
