C of I Parish Hall, Springvale Road, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PE

This single-storey Italianate school house, built around the 1850s and probably designed by Charles Lanyon, now serves as a Church of Ireland parish hall. The building is located at the north-east end of Springvale Road at the south end of Ballywalter village.

The front western elevation is symmetrical and divided into three bays. The two outer bays each contain a grouping of three conjoined sash windows with horizontal astragals, set within decorative semicircular arched surrounds with keystones to each window head and brackets to the single cill beneath the group. These outer bays have plain quoins. The centre bay is slightly recessed and contains three full-height arched recesses in a similar style to the window surrounds. Within each recess is a further arched opening containing a sash window with semicircular arched head, horizontal and marginal astragals.

A large flat-roofed porch extends from the south side of the hall. Its western facade features a plain sheeted timber double door with a plain semicircular arch fanlight, all set within a semicircular arched opening with dripstone moulding and label stops. The south side of the porch is blank but shows evidence of two semicircular-headed window openings, now blocked.

The front facade is finished in lined render, while the rest of the building is finished in an untidy mixture of plain and rough-cast render. The roof of the main hall is hipped with Bangor blue slates. The north elevation contains two now-blocked window openings with surrounds similar to those on the outer bays of the front. A large modern lean-to extension is attached to the rear, with modern windows and a small plain door with steps.

The building originally housed Ballywalter Park or Springvale school, built around 1850 on land given by Andrew Mulholland, owner of Ballywalter Park. A photograph dating from around 1900-1910 shows that the building originally had two gabled outer bays with additional roundel windows, a centre arched portico, and a small gabled porch to the south. The arches of the central portico, still partly discernible, originally displayed stylistic elements similar to the nearby east gate lodge of Ballywalter Park, also designed by Charles Lanyon and built around the same period. The school closed in 1932, and the building has since been used as a parochial hall. The alterations and modifications, particularly the loss of the original gabled bays and roundel windows, have greatly simplified the original Italianate design.
