5 Main Street, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PQ

This is a small, single-storey vernacular dwelling likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It is situated within a terrace of mostly later 19th-century two-storey houses on the south side of Main Street, Ballywalter. The house features a steeply pitched gabled roof covered with Bangor blue slates, and a Velux window is located at the rear. The exterior is finished with plain render, and cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The front (west-facing) elevation is symmetrical, with a central timber stable door flanked by sash windows on either side. A flat-roofed extension or porch, featuring a large corrugated transparent PVC section, is situated to the left of the rear elevation. A small, modern-style timber window is also present on the rear of the main house.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a terrace on this site. Historical records from 1837 describe Ballywalter as having mostly single-storey stone cottages, many with slated roofs and plastered or whitewashed walls. It is probable that the original terrace was predominantly single-storey, and that No. 5 is the only original property predating 1834, with the remainder of the terrace being constructed later in the 19th century.
