Description

A largely plain two-storey terraced block situated at the south end of Main Street, Ballywalter, at the junction with Harbour Road. The building dates from the early to mid-19th century, probably between 1840 and 1859, though buildings are recorded on this site on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and c.1860.

The block comprises a relatively large house (No. 1) and a former shop (No. 3), with the entire structure finished in roughcast render. The main roof is gabled and covered with asbestos-free slates, with what appear to be stone parapets and three yellow brick chimneys. Cast iron rainwater goods with PVC gutters serve the rear extensions.

The front (west) elevation is asymmetrical. No. 1 features a glazed and panelled doorway positioned right of centre, encased within plain pilasters, entablature and cornice. Two modern timber windows flank the doorway to the right, with one to the left, all with decorative surrounds featuring segmental arch heads and moulded keystones. No. 3 to the far left displays a modern shop front with large fixed light windows on either side of a central glazed door. Directly above the shop front are three modern timber windows, with a further four to the right. The north and south gables are blank.

The rear of the block has been considerably extended northwards with a large part one, part two-storey lean-to extension fitted with modern windows. The remaining rear facade contains various modern windows, including two to the north set within gabled half-dormers.

Late Victorian detailing to the doorway and ground floor windows of No. 1 suggests the entire block may have been rebuilt in the later 1800s, though the awkward spacing between the cornice above the doorway and the window directly above might indicate that these surrounds were merely late 19th-century additions to an earlier structure. The floor directly above the shop section originally belonged to No. 3 but has been part of No. 1 since at least the early 1970s.
