Wales Cottages, Row Of Cottages About 10 Metres North East Of Wales Farmhouse

Wales Cottages is a row of cottages located about 10 meters north-east of Wales Farmhouse. Originally consisting of three cottages, it now contains two. The cottages date back to the 15th century and later, constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared. They feature a thatched roof with a coped gable on the west side and a plain roof on the east, along with brick chimney stacks.

The buildings are two storeys high with six bays and an irregular arrangement of windows. Most of the windows are horizontal bar casements under timber lintels, primarily three-light, with a two-light window in the upper fifth bay and a four-light window in the lower fourth bay. There is no window in the upper fourth bay, but a continuous string course runs over the upper second and third bays, possibly indicating a former gable. The window in the upper sixth bay has ovolo moulding, while the lower third bay features a boarded door in a heavy frame with early 20th-century latticework timber and a slate porch. The lower fifth bay has a boarded door beneath a plain rectangular fanlight.

At the rear, there are various lean-to buildings and a stair turret on the north-west corner, which includes a 13th-century boarded door in a heavy frame. Only the western portion of the cottages has been seen from the inside, revealing dividing partitions made of ovolo mould plank and muntin on both levels, along with camber-arched doorways. There is a plain camber-arched fireplace in the first-floor west gable, and the circular stairs in the turret wrap around a tree newel, with the treads cased and a small stairlight in the gable wall. In the dividing wall between the two cottages, there appears to be a raised chuck truss with a cambered collar. In the center room of the adjoining cottage, a four-panelled ceiling with deep chamfered beams can be observed. The cottages have been reasonably maintained but have been unoccupied for several years.
