Description
Pennywells, also known as East Cottage and West Cottage, is a pair of cottages that were formerly Alnham Castle Farmhouse. They date from the early 18th century and are constructed of roughly-dressed stone. The roof features pantiles on the front pitch and Welsh slates at the back, with one old brick ridge stack and two renewed end stacks.
The cottages are two storeys high and have three windows. The cottage on the left has a boarded door to the left, which is sheltered by a pantiled pent roof. To the right on the ground floor, there is a 12-pane sash window, with a 6-pane sash window above. The cottage on the right has two broad bays with a central 6-panelled door. It features 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and 6-pane sashes above.
Above the door, there is an 18th-century Newcastle fire insurance plate. The cottages have a steeply-pitched gabled roof with thin raised coping and reverse-stepped gables, along with an 18th-century outshut at the rear.
Inside, the cottages contain old beams, several 6-panelled doors, one 2-panelled door, and 18th-century roof timbers.
