Description

Biddlestone Roman Catholic Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel that was formerly a private chapel for the now-demolished Biddlestone Hall. The basement dates back to the 13th century, while the chapel itself was built in the early 19th century, possibly around 1820, by architect John Dobson for Walter Selby. The structure features random rubble, ashlar stonework, and a graduated Lakeland slate roof.

The basement consists of a tunnel-vaulted ground floor from the 13th-century tower, with massive masonry and walls that are 6 feet thick. An inner doorway at the east end has a pointed arch with a continuous chamfered surround, and there is a continuous offset above the ground floor.

Medieval masonry is visible on the north and west sides, extending up to the eaves level on the north side, while the rest of the chapel is finished in ashlar. The chapel has three bays, with pointed-arched south windows that feature cusped Y-tracery and dripstones. A similar three-light window is located on the east side.

The roof is gabled with flat coping, kneelers, and a foliated-cross finial on the east gable. The west end of the chapel is irregular and patched where it connected to the house. Access to the first floor is provided by a later closed-in external stair, and there are parts of two blocked mullioned windows from the 16th or 17th century with moulded frames.

The chapel is situated in an isolated and extremely picturesque location.
