Description
Church Path Cottage and Dovecote is a cottage with an integral dovecote that has origins dating back to the 15th century, although it has been mostly altered in the 18th century and later. The building is constructed from local stone that is roughly coursed, topped with plain clay tiles between coped gables, and features brick end chimney stacks. It is two stories tall with three bays of 20th-century windows.
On the rear wall, there is a 15th-century doorway that has a plain chamfered segmental pointed arch, surrounded by what appears to be old stonework. The interior has been significantly altered in the late 20th century, but the thick west gable wall still contains ovens and other features.
Attached to the west gable is a substantial 18th-century dovecote, built in matching construction. This dovecote is of full height and has a ball finial on the coping. There is a timber window halfway up the west wall, and above it are ten triangular openings for birds, arranged in a pyramid shape of four, three, two, and one. The dovecote can accommodate approximately 350 birds and is considered an unusual survival, possibly linked to the large Rectory dovecote located just across the road.
