Description
The implement sheds to the west of West Camel Farm date from the late 19th century. They feature dressed stone piers and a spine wall, with a roof clad in corrugated iron and weatherboarded gable ends that conceal a 'solid thatch' roof structure. The large 4-bay implement shed faces the village street to the west, while an integral 2-bay open-fronted shed is located at the rear to the east, separated by an existing spine wall. The roof is supported by closely spaced pole joists and tie-beams resting on wall- and arcade-plates, and it is constructed from coarse brushwood and straw, originally thatched on top but now covered with corrugated iron sheets. The 2-bay shed at the rear has lost much of its 'solid thatch'. This building is a very rare example of a 'solid thatch' roof structure, which is a primitive construction method that eliminates the need for roof trusses. Similar examples can be found at Hamlyns Farm in Long Load and Hainbury Farm in Northover, Yeovilton.
