Description

Mary Street Memorial Schools, built in 1886, is a red brick building located at the corner of Mary Street and Mount Street. The structure is asymmetrical and features a tall square corner tower topped with a lead dome and a wooden cupola with a weathervane.

The building has corner pilasters that extend into the walls above the ground floor, along with stringcourses. It showcases lancet windows across three storeys, each with segmental brick heads and keystones. To the left of the tower, three gables project from the elevation. The roofs are covered with slate, and there are moulded cornices. The gables feature decorated fields with plasterwork in their pediments. The left-hand gable contains two windows under segmental heads with plaster surrounds, while the central gables have two windows with segmental heads, dripmoulds, and keystones. A further pair of windows is set back between the gables.

The entrance doorway has a plain moulded brick surround and a cornice band with decorative volutes, displaying the lettering "Mary : St : Memorial : Schools." To the left of the entrance is a pedimented tablet that reads "Built A.D, 1886." The elevation facing Mount Street features a tall pedimented facade with a cartouche above a large mullioned and transomed window on the second floor. The corner tower is noted for its significant contribution to the townscape.

Mary Street House, the Lawn, Unitarian Chapel, and the School on Mary Street form a group with all the listed buildings on Mount Street and Vivary Park, as well as Wilton House in Hammets Walk, and Nos 1 to 14 (consecutive) Upper High Street.
