Description
The Former Marine School, also known as the Ocean Road Annexe, was built between 1867 and 1869 by T M Clemence, the Borough Surveyor, with an addition made in 1909 by T A Page & Son, Architects. This two-storey building features red brick with stone dressings and a flat roof, designed in a dignified "Elizabethan" style. It has a three-bay square plan, with most bays projecting forward and all corners marked by rusticated quoins.
The central entrance from Ocean Road boasts a grand stone doorcase supported by paired rusticated Tuscan columns and topped with a full entablature. The building's elevation is crowned by an entablature and a balustrade, which is pierced above the projecting bays and adorned with decorative cresting. At the south-east corner, there is a square tower that rises one full storey above the roof level, also topped with an entablature and a pierced balustrade. Each face of the tower is lit by a semi-circular headed window. Originally, the tower featured an observatory, which was removed in 1979. The building underwent cleaning and restoration in April 1980 and serves as the original structure built for the Marine School.
