Description

Nos 29, 31, and 33 Beach Road are early 19th-century houses located on the north side of Beach Road, formerly known as Bent House Road. These red brick buildings feature a stone eaves cornice and a hipped slate roof, presenting a dignified appearance with slight variations among the units. The elevation consists of 11 bays, divided by giant two-storey pilasters with stone bases and caps in a pattern of a, b, a; a, b, a; b, a, where 'a' represents two bays and 'b' represents one bay.

No 29 has two storeys above a semi-basement, with the basement made of ashlar. Its central entrance is approached by a flight of steps and framed by a tri-partite stone doorcase. The west return elevation has three blank bays. No 31 also has two storeys and features a low ashlar plinth. Its windows are taller than those of No 29, and it has a central entrance at ground level, also framed by a tri-partite stone doorcase. No 33 has similar windows and plinth as No 31, with three sashed bays on its east return elevation.

These houses were not depicted on Wood's plan of South Shields from 1827, but two houses are listed in the Census Enumerators Return for 1841.
