Description
Number 23 Beach Road is an early 19th-century house with a rendered exterior and a slate roof. It has two storeys above a semi-basement and features two dormer windows. The building has five bays with original sash windows. The entrance is approached by a flight of steps and is framed by a later 18th-century doorcase with a straight entablature. Numbers 1 to 23 (odd) were built as "Ogle Terrace" on land owned by the Reverend J S Ogle. The westernmost house was reported to have been built in 1816, according to the Newcastle Courant from April 19, 1817. The complete terrace is depicted on Wood's plan of South Shields from 1827.
