Description
The entrance building of the former Theatre of Varieties, located at 88 King Street, was designed by architect Frank Matcham and constructed between 1898 and 1899. This structure serves as the long entrance foyer that connects to the auditorium across Union Alley, which is not of special interest. The King Street elevation features three storeys and is made of terracotta, currently painted. The ground floor has a modern canopy and other contemporary fittings. Above this, the design includes a free interpretation of classical details reminiscent of a 17th-century frontispiece. The first floor is dominated by a large semi-circular arched and glazed opening. On the second floor, there are two small semi-circular hooded windows flanking a semi-circular hooded niche, with the niche's hood rising into the first stage of a stepped gable, each step supported by scrolled brackets.
