Description
The war memorial is located in the churchyard of St Hilda's Church, which is also a Grade II-listed building, to the west of the church. Constructed from Stancliffe stone, the memorial is approximately 7 meters tall and takes the shape of an early medieval cross. The cross shaft rises from a plinth that sits on a three-stepped base.
The front face of the cross head features intricate carvings of interlace and a relief of Christ crucified. Below this, the main dedicatory inscription is carved in relief on the cross shaft, which reads: "TO THE/ GLORY OF/ GOD THIS/ CROSS WAS/ ERECTED IN/ THE YEAR/ OF OUR/ LORD 1921,/ IN/ GRATEFUL/ REMEMBR/ ANCE OF/ THE DECLA/ RATION OF/ PEACE IN/ THE GREAT/ EUROPEAN/ WAR AND/ IN MEMORY/ OF THOSE/ WHO FOUGHT/ AND FELL/ FOR THEIR/ SOVEREIGN/ AND EMPIRE/ BY SEA LAND/ AND AIR."
Below the dedication, three ornamental panels on the front face of the cross shaft display interlace patterns, symbols of the Passion, and three ammonites, which are the emblem of St Hilda. Additionally, a relief of St Hilda holding a model of her church is carved on the rear of the cross shaft. The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the four faces of the plinth.
The memorial is situated on a raised platform that is accessible via a rake of four steps from the east.
