Description
Alum House, located at River Drive, is an early 19th-century building associated with the Tyne Dock Engineering Company Limited. It is constructed of brick, which is now painted, and features a slate roof. The west elevation has three storeys and two bays, while the south elevation has two storeys and four bays. Stone heads adorn the windows, and the principal west elevation showcases two elegant segmental bow windows spanning all three storeys, each with three lights that mostly retain their original curved sashes. The ground floor windows are blocked, and there is a continuous stone cill band at the first and second floors. Broad pilasters mark the corners of the west elevation, contributing to its elegant appearance, making it the only surviving example of its type within the old town. On the long south elevation, the two western first-floor bays are blind, while the other two have sash windows. The ground floor features two sash windows beneath those on the first floor and an unadorned door to the west. The western end of this elevation once had a 19th-century public house front when it was known as "The Alum House."
