Description
The entrance gates and gatepiers to Vivary Park, located at the south end of High Street, likely date from 1896 when the park was established. These gates feature elaborate late Victorian ironwork. The main gatepiers have openwork circular designs and tops with brackets that support bronze lamps with scrolled crossbars. The double gates between the piers display scrolled details and the Taunton Borough coat of arms among the uprights. There are overthrows adorned with scrolls and finials. On either side, subsidiary gatepiers topped with bronze acorns support lower double gates, with all ironwork details consistent throughout. Short fixed extensions of openwork railings are present to the left and right. The listed buildings in Vivary Park and Mount Street form a group with several nearby structures, including the School, Unitarian Chapel, the Lawn, Mary Street House, Wilton House, and Nos 1 to 14 Upper High Street.
