Description
The Unitarian Chapel, built in 1721, features a façade that was altered with 19th-century stucco decoration. It is a two-storey building with heavy moulded cornices. Both storeys are divided by pairs of Corinthian pilasters at the centre. The chapel has a hipped old tile roof and five windows, with the end windows on the upper floor blocked. The windows have architrave surrounds with imposts and bases. The central doorcase is flanked by Corinthian pilasters that support a triangular pediment, and it features double three-panel doors. The doorway is flanked by wrought-iron lamps with scrolled standards. Inside, the chapel boasts a very good early 18th-century interior with square Corinthian columns that extend to the full height of the building, oak galleries, a carved pulpit, and brass chandeliers. The Unitarian Chapel, along with Mary Street House, the Lawn, and the School on Mary Street, forms a group with all the listed buildings in Mount Street and Vivary Park, as well as Wilton House in Hammets Walk and Nos 1 to 14 Upper High Street.
