Description
The War Memorial in Vivary Park was created around 1920 by I F Shellard. It stands 26 feet high, located slightly south of the entrance gates. The memorial features a granite cenotaph that is sheltered by a domed baldachino made of ashlar blocks, all resting on a stepped plinth. The dome is supported by Doric columns. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the cenotaph, which has an inscription on the base that reads: "The Great War 1914-1918. In Grateful Memory of Taunton's Glorious Dead," and on the rear: "Our Land Inviolate, Your Monument."
This memorial is part of a group of listed buildings in Vivary Park and Mount Street, which includes the School, Unitarian Chapel, the Lawn, and Mary Street House in Mary Street, as well as Wilton House in Hammets Walk and Nos 1 to 14 (consecutive) Upper High Street.
