Description
This is a group of gate piers, gates, and railings dating from approximately 1830 to 1840, forming the entrance to the drive of Pittville Park. The substantial, octagonal gate piers are constructed of stone and have peaked caps, with the pair at the main entrance rising to about 2 metres in height and a smaller pair at approximately 1.5 metres. The wrought iron double gates feature flattened spearhead bars and dogbars, sloping downwards towards the centre. Matching wrought iron railings run alongside the drive, sweeping down above a low stone wall to the smaller piers. A historical note indicates that Pittville was developed for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with landscape architect John Forbes responsible for the general layout, including the park. The gateway is a notable feature of the streetscape, located north-west of, and opposite, numbers 91 and 93 Pittville Lawn.
