Description

Ellingham House, now divided into flats, was built between 1840 and 1841. It was commissioned by timber merchant Solomon Sims for Susan Dawson, a widow from Brislington, Somerset, as part of the development of Pittville Lawn, which was undertaken for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842. The overall layout of this development was designed by the architect Joseph Forbes, and Ellingham House contributes to the distinguished architectural group that forms Pittville Lawn.

The villa is constructed with stucco over brick, with concealed roof and brick-and-stucco side stacks. The exterior features stucco detailing, including Doric pilasters extending through the ground and first floors, a crowning architrave, frieze, and cornice. The garden facade has similar pilasters. Windows are 6/6 sash windows, with tooled architraves; the ground-floor windows have cornices supported by console brackets. The left return includes a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a porch with Ionic columns in antis, featuring an architrave, frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The entrance door is a 4-panel design, partly glazed with sidelights and an overlight incorporating glazing bars. Basement windows are also 6/6 sashes. A verandah to the right return has an anthemion motif on the uprights and an openwork scalloped frieze. Area railings to the rear are decorated with an X-motif. The interior was not inspected during the listing assessment.
