Description

Wyddrington House is a villa, built between 1836 and 1837, and now converted into flats. It is located on Pittville Lawn, Cheltenham. The villa is constructed of stucco over brick, with brick and stucco end stacks and a concealed roof. A cast iron balcony is also present.

The villa is three storeys high with a basement, featuring three first-floor windows and a three-storey-on-basement entrance bay set back to the right. The right-hand bay of the main range projects slightly. Stucco detailing is abundant, including tooled architraves to the windows. Those on the ground floor have a frieze and dentil cornice, and the window to the right has Doric pilasters; an architrave, frieze, and cornice are above the first-floor windows, and a crowning frieze and cornice run along the top. The right return has horizontal rustication to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs above the windows. Original 6/6 sash windows are largely retained; the window on the right, at ground floor, is tripartite, with 6/6 panes between two 2/2 panes. A former entrance, in a solid porch on the right return, is now blocked and contains a multi-pane round-arched window with a tooled head and keystone, along with Ionic columns in antis and a cornice above. A 20th-century entrance is now located at the rear. The rear elevation similarly features tooled architraves to the windows, with sills on feet to the first floor, and primarily has 6/6 sash windows.

The interior retains original joinery, including shutters to some windows. A continuous balustrade to the ground floor incorporates a double scroll motif.

The plot was purchased from Thomas Smith in 1836 for £650, with the house to be built within 12 months. It was built as part of a development undertaken for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, the general layout designed by the architect John Forbes. Wyddrington House contributes to a distinguished group of villas along Pittville Lawn.
