Description
A semi-detached pair of houses located on Evesham Road, Cheltenham, built in 1844. The construction is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof featuring truncated side and rear stacks, and wrought-iron balconies. The houses have a double-depth plan.
The exterior is two storeys with a basement. It exhibits bracketed eaves and a plat band above horizontal rustication to the ground floor. The symmetrical front has four windows, with projecting end bays and a further projecting porch to the central bay, creating a 2:2:2 window arrangement. The first floor features 8/8 sash windows on the outer bays, flanked by two 6/6 sash windows; the outer bays have tripartite sashes with horizontal glazing bars within slightly projecting oriels with moulded cornices. Blind boxes are present on the oriels. Steps lead to overlights within a porch that has impost courses to semicircular arches and a cornice to the parapet, featuring a cross-braced balustrade. Similar parapets are found on the projecting bay windows to the return and rear elevations, with glazing-bar sashes to the tripartite front windows and 4/4-pane returns.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
Oriel windows have decorative balconies. These houses were part of the Pittville development and remained unsold until Pitt’s death in 1842. Originally they were known as Nos 1 and 2 Saxham Villas.
