Description

The gateway to Victoria Park, dating from the late 19th century, features stone gate piers and wrought iron gates. There are four square gate piers, with the inner pair standing approximately 3 metres high and the outer pair slightly lower. Each pier has fielded panel sides and prominent pyramidal caps. The elaborate iron gates are adorned with flowing foliated scrolls along the top rail. The left main gate includes a spear finial with a moulded coat of arms at its locking end, while the right gate has a moulded cartouche in the centre that displays raised lettering indicating that the park was presented by the families of the Stotts and the Smiths, who were woollen manufacturers at Syke Side Mill on Manchester Road.
