Description

The Methodist Church, built in 1857 and altered and enlarged in 1883, is located on Manchester Road in Haslingden. It is constructed of rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with a ridge ventilator. The church has a nave with a chancel and transepts, with the north transept connected to a gabled crosswing known as the Memorial Hall. Designed in the Gothic style, it includes Perpendicular tracery in the windows and a pierced parapet.

The east gable facing the road has diagonal buttresses, a first-floor band, and crocketed apex pinnacles. In the center, there is a large moulded Perpendicular-style doorway, topped by a large five-light transomed window. Flanking these are two octagonal turrets, which are square at ground level and feature embattled bellcotes above the parapet, finished with crocketed pinnacles. The outer bays contain a smaller door and a first-floor window. The five-bay side walls are adorned with gableted buttresses that have weatherings and two-light transomed windows. The chancel and transepts match the overall style, with a large five-light west window in the chancel.

Inside, there is a three-sided gallery with a pierced Gothic-style front, supported by octagonal iron columns that have panelled faces and moulded caps. The west end of the gallery is now enclosed by a glazed screen. The chancel, added in 1883, features a moulded arch with ball-flower ornament, a marble reredos screen arcade, and a carved wooden organ case. Most of these furnishings, including a now-missing screen, were donated in 1885 by the family of James Stott of Sykeside House, Rawtenstall Road.
