Description

The Church of St Peter is a church built in 1890 by architect Basil Champneys, although it remains uncompleted. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The church has a nave and chancel combined into one space, which was originally intended to include a north aisle. Instead, there is a lean-to south aisle. The design is in the Decorated style and includes an octagonal turret at the east end.

The church has six bays, with walls that are battered at the lower level. There is a gabled porch on the second bay of the north side, which has a moulded arch supported by buttresses. To the right of the porch is a two-light traceried window, and to the left are three similar windows. In the easternmost bay, there are coupled windows that are slightly smaller and set at a higher level, all featuring hoodmoulds. The west end has a larger four-light window, while the east end has a three-light window, both also with hoodmoulds. An octagonal turret with a belfry and battlements is located at the south-east corner.

Inside, the church has a six-bay aisle arcade supported by octagonal columns and features chamfered two-centred arches. The roof is elegantly arch-braced with Queen struts and has a flat ceiling in the center, except for the chancel end, which has a panelled wagon roof. On the north wall, there is a brass memorial plaque dedicated to the Reverend Weldon Champneys, who was the Vicar of Haslingden and died in 1892. This plaque was erected by parishioners in recognition of his and his widow's generosity towards the church.
