Description

Pennington Infant School, built in the later 19th century, is a red brick building with stone dressings and buttresses. Decorative blue brick geometric designs are incorporated into the facade, and the building is topped with a banded tiled roof and coped gable ends. A corner bell turret with a clock on a wrought iron bracket is a prominent feature. The school has a single storey, with eight sets of paired windows featuring cusped Gothic lights. A wooden porch provides access. The northern facade has double gable ends; the eastern gable is advanced to align with Wainsford Road, and each gable has a five-light window. The building is situated on a central island site in Pennington and forms a group of local interest with Wistaria, Pencombe Cottages, the building in the garden of No 1 Wainsford Road, St Mark’s Church and the War Memorial along Ramley Road. The school is positioned as a focal point, commanding views down five roads that converge on the site.
