Description

Westover is a detached house built in the early 19th century. It features a facade made of ham stone ashlar, with coursed rubble on the sides and rear. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has a shallow pitch between stepped coped gables, topped by a low parapet. The stone slab chimney stacks have moulded caps and are set diagonally on bases. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. Architectural details include a plinth, a band course, a cornice, and a low parapet with billet mould coping. The windows are 16-pane sash windows set in architraves. The second bay on the lower floor features a semi-circular arched doorway with a half-glazed door beneath a radially-glazed fanlight. This doorway is sheltered by an open cast iron front porch with a hipped metal roof. The interior has not been seen. Surrounding the front garden is a boundary wall made of roughly cut and squared stone, about one metre high, with plain coping. The wall includes a central gateway with square gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps, and a 19th-century gate with speartop spikes. The wall returns towards the house on the south side, enhancing the setting of the house and contributing positively to the streetscape.
