Description
The Old Dovecote is located in the southeast corner of the grounds of Keinton Mandeville County Primary School. It is possibly an 18th-century structure with a 20th-century roof. The dovecote is built from locally sourced lias stone that is roughly cut and squared, and it features a clay pantiled lean-to roof with a rectangular plan. There are plain doorways on the north, east, and west faces. The west gable has pierced stone slabs with stone slate shelves for birds, arranged in layers with 2, 4, and 6 holes. Inside, there is space for 21 nests on the north wall, 1 on the west wall, and 6 on the east wall, all created with heavy rough lias slab shelves. The floor is made of Keinton stone flags. This building is unusual for its type, as the nest holes are larger than typical, and it is isolated, not clearly connected to any older property. It is also possible that this structure served as a bee house.
