Description

This dovecote, likely built in the late 16th century, is located 75 meters northwest of Corsham Court. It is made of limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a gabled stone-tiled roof, complete with bases for finials at the gable ends. The structure has a rectangular plan and is oriented northwest to southeast.

The dovecote stands tall with three bays. On the southwest elevation, there is a low doorway with a chamfered, pointed-centred arched surround and a plank oak door. High in each gable end, there are small rectangular openings with moulded jambs and chamfered hoodmoulds, which provide entry for the doves.

Inside, the walls are lined with limewashed nesting boxes above a stone rubble plinth. There are two rows of ashlar alighting ledges around the walls, and the northeast and southwest timber wall plates also serve a similar purpose. The principal rafters feature high, tenoned collars and secondary lapped collars, with square-set purlins between them that form the base for a former louvre. Additionally, there are two rows of butt-purlins, and the eave ends of the rafters are beam-filled.
